Not far from Lodève is the Priory of Grandmont situated on a prehistoric site overlooking spectacular landscape. Classified Historical Monument, a real jewel of roman architecture, it is the only remaining monastery of the Order of Grandmont entirely preserved from the 12th and 13th centuries: church, cloister, chapter hall, convents. Saint Michel is one of the better examples of architecture from this period, pure and well-balanced; it includes the only cloister of this preserved order. This place that is steeped in historical significance also shelters Gallo-Roman vestiges, Visigoth graves and rock sediment with ancestral imprints of dinosaurs. In the heart of the huge animal park, the religiosity of the Priory’s buildings stands alongside the mysterious dolmens and prehistoric megaliths.
